My Favorite Breast Pump, The Medela Pump In Style Advanced
|December 29, 2011||Posted by under Baby Gear Reviews|
I have owned a Medela Pump In Style Breast Pump since my first child was born nine years ago, and have pumped for six different children now. I didn’t start out with a Medela though, I started out with a cheapy Avent manual hand pump. The first time I used it, I cried. It was so uncomfortable, and it took forever to get the milk I needed to go out on a date with my husband. The second pump I tried was a battery operated Avent pump. This pump was slightly more comfortable, and my hand didn’t hurt when I was finished. However, it still took me about 45 minutes to get enough milk for one bottle. Pumping from one breast at a time is so inefficient! I finally saved up the money and bought my first Pump In Style breast pump.
Medela Pump In Style Finally! Now I was getting somewhere! For the first time I could pump out a decent amount of breastmilk in approximately the same time it would take me to nurse my baby because it is a double pump, meaning you can pump out of both breasts at the same time.
And the Medela Pump In Style breastpump was more comfortable because of how much I could adjust the suction as well as the speed.
Even on the days when I needed to pump multiple times a day, I didn’t have nipple soreness. I’ve now used a Pump In Style pump with 6 children, and I am so happy with this breast pump, it puts all other pumps to shame.
The newest advanced model, is even better with it’s new features. In my experienced opinion, this is the best breast pump available today. After reading through tons of Medela Pump In Style breast pump reviews, I’m convinced that a lot of other moms feel the exact same way. I’ve read through other best breast pump reviews, but the Medela always comes out on top.
I personally LOVE the tote bag style, but you can also get the Medela Pump In Style Advanced Backpack as well. The new and improved removable cooler bag is so much better than the older model, and is easier to clean as well. The 2-phase expression technology blows my mind with how well it simulates my baby’s natural nursing style. It starts out with rapid light suction to get your milk to let down. Once let down occurs, you touch the let down button and the pump switches over to stronger, slower deeper suction. This feature ensures the quicker pumping session possible. Those are just a few of my favorite features.
The breast pump that you choose will really impact your success at pumping. Whether you are pumping for the occasional time away from your baby, or you are pumping multiple times a day at work, the Medela Pump In Style Advanced breast pump is the most comfortable and efficient way to pump breastmilk for your baby.

Strong Enough And Gentle Enough For Daily Use
This pump was designed with a super strong motor that was built to be used several times a day, every day. The pump has a 60 Hz motor with a 50-250 mmHg vacuum. The strong motor ensures that you won’t burn out the pump with overuse. The pump weighs 9 lbs. and is 14 x 6 7/8 x 11 1/2.
More Milk, Less Time Pumping
The double-pump function allows mom to pump from both breasts simultaneously. This will cut your pumping time in half by not having to pump from one breast first, then the other. The pump also has an adjustable speed and vacuum dial, which lets you choose your most comfortable setting. When I pump, I like to start with lower suction and work my way up to higher suction, but each mom is different. That’s why it’s important to be able to adjust the speed and strength.
The other way the Pump In Style Advanced gives you more milk in less time is the 2-Phase Expression technology. The 2-phase expression technology closely resembles a baby’s natural sucking patterns. When the baby first latches on he sucks with short, fast, weaker sucks to get the milk to let down. After the milk has begun to flow the baby deepens and strengthens his suck to bring down more milk as quickly as possible. The One Touch Let-Down Button controls the 2-phase expression technology. When the let down reflex has begun, touch the let down button to signal the machine to switch over to the normal pumping pattern. The 2-phase technology will extract more milk similar to a baby, keeping mom comfortable, and freeing up time.
Keeping Breastmilk Cold Is A Top Priority
The Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breast Pump With On The Go Tote comes with a removable cooler bag to store your pumped milk in. This feature is so well-thought out! If you forget your ice-pack, you can put the cooler in your office refrigerator. The cooler bag is PVC-free, and comes with a contoured ice pack which will keep your milk cold for up to 12 hours. When the bag starts to get grimy on the inside, it is easy to clean at the sink. The cooler holds four bottles of milk along with the ice pack.
This cooler and ice pack combo really does a fantastic job at cooling the milk, and keeping it cold. It works just as well as the refrigerator.
Convenient, Stylish Bag
The Pump In Style Tote bag is mad of a sturdy black microfiber fabric. The microfiber will stay looking new for years, and is easily cleaned with a damp cloth. The bag is roomy enough to hold all of your pumping accessories including: bottles, battery pack, the cooler, etc. The feature on this bag that I LOVE is that it has a little pocket to store the tubing. In my old Pump In Style bag, the tubing would always get tangles up with the other cords. Now, just wrap the tubing into a circle and secure it in the pocket.
Battery Pack Allows More Freedom
I love the battery pack, and use it frequently. The battery pack means that I can pump anywhere, anytime, without having to worry about finding a convenient outlet. In the car, on a camping trip, in a chair that is not near an outlet, pumping just got more convenient. There is also an optional 9v vehicle light adapter available for purchase, this is not included with the pump.
All of the parts on the pump that make contact with breastmilk are BPA/DEHP-free, including the bottles, and all parts of the breast shield. Built in bottle holders are included and will keep the milk bottles from tipping over during expression, or after the pumping session is over and you are gathering your supplies, and putting yourself back together. The Pump In Style Advanced is the quietest breast pump on the market, combine that with the discreet Pump In Style tote, and no one will be tipped off to how you are spending your break time at work. The pump also comes with a 1 year limited warranty on the motor, 90 days limited on other parts.

I found very few complaints for this breast pump on consumer sites around the internet. One purchaser complained that condensation built up in the tubing of the pump. This can be fixed by leaving the tubing attached to the pump and letting the machine continue to pump, without the shields attached for an additional 2 minutes after use.
